ROTARY SPECIAL MONTHS:    OCTOBER IS ECONOMIC & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Our AGM will be held in conjunction with our Showcase Review Meeting

at Tompkins on Swan on Monday, November 7 from 6.30pm

Our Constitution states that the order in which business is to be transacted is:

(i) first, the consideration of the accounts and reports of the board;

(ii) second, the election of board members to replace outgoing board members (Note – this election can be deferred to a special general meeting held no later than 31 December each year); and

(iii) third, any other business requiring consideration by the Association at the annual general meeting.

With respect to (ii) above I invite members to nominate for the following Board positions:

President (for 2017/18)                        President Elect (for 2018/19),

Director – Finance                               Director – Marketing

Director – Community                          Director – Youth

Director – International

Secretary                                             Treasurer

I also invite members to nominate for President Nominee (for 2019/20)

With respect to (iii) above I advise that any resolutions to be moved at the AGM require 21 days’ notice to members so must be received by the Secretary by Monday, October 10 to allow time for distribution.

Please consider thoughtfully how you wish to serve the Club in 2017/18.

Cluster Sundowner at Piney Lakes

On Saturday September 17th members from Applecross, Booragoon, Canning Bridge and Attadale Rotary Clubs met for a very enjoyable Sundowner at Piney Lakes.

It was a great opportunity to meet and get to know other Rotarians within our Cluster.

Monday, September 19th

President John welcomed our guest speaker Matt Taylor – MLA for Bateman,

guests Neil McKay, and James Doogue and all members.

Rod had great pleasure introducing Olivia Haslam, the Principal of Personal Pathway Solutions (PPS), who will co-Major Sponsor our Charity Golf Day which will be held on March 10th, 2017.

PPS is a leading West Australian marketing business.  They showcase strategic investment opportunities across finance, property investment and equity fund investments with the aim of highlighting opportunities which could improve a client’s financial path.

The company will provide a sponsorship of $10,000.

Personal Pathway Solutions

President John reported on the Board Meeting: -

·      The District grant for uniforms for St Yared is in the bank.

·      Community Service Director:  Llew has offered to take on this role as well as Youth.

·      At the moment there appears to be a strong bias towards International projects because of St Yared.    If anyone is interested in community service, please offer to be on the committee.

·      Trish Sharp will take on the Social Officer role looking after Sundowners.

·      November 7th is the Showcase meeting.  We are hoping that all members, their partners, friends and fellow Rotarians from our Cluster, as well as Fremantle RC will attend.

·      We are hoping to access a $10,000 stamp duty tax exemption for the Rotary Charity House.

·      The circulated club calendar may need to be reviewed regarding the gap over Christmas.

·      At the Sundowner last Sunday, we learnt that Booragoon RC are already sponsoring two students from St Yared.

·      On October 3rd the District Governor, Linda McLerie, is visiting Attadale RC.  We would like as many members and partners as possible to attend.

·      On October 24th our guest speaker is Gareth Parker.  He will be talking on The US Elections.  Partners and Rotarians from our Cluster are invited to attend.  This should be a very interesting, informative and topical talk.

·      Mal has USB’s with the power point, video and speaker’s notes on, to be used by members when doing presentations for St Yared.

Guest Speaker

Mr Matthew (Matt) Howard Taylor MLA for Bateman is Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for State Development; Finance; Innovation.

Matt has set up and managed numerous businesses and wants to work with local businesses to help them thrive.

He has been a Company Director so he understands the responsibility that comes with owning and operating a business.

In addition to the private sector, Matt has also gained experience in the three levels of government including a senior management role with the Commonwealth Scientific and

Industrial Research Organisation.

Matt has a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours.

He has almost ten years’ leadership experience in planning some of WA’s largest and most innovative urban and industrial developments.

His depth of skills, experience and knowledge would provide immediate benefit in a large range of portfolios including Planning, Science and Innovation, State Development, Fisheries, Environment, Water, Regional Development and Lands, Energy, Transport, and Small Business.

Matt gave a very interesting talk and was happy to answer a wide range of probing questions.

One Man, Two Guvnors

Gillian reminded members of the theatre night on Wednesday November 23rd.

Tickets are ready for members to sell.  There are only 100 available so please get your tickets as soon as possible so that you and your friends don’t miss out.

Shipment Planned

Kerry informed the meeting that Trevor Canning had procured almost a container load of hospital, medical and school equipment.  This was being sent to The Jubilee Foundation in Davao in the Philippines.

Trevor is also Chairman of Wheel Chairs for Children.  He is trying to get land and their own property so that they can stop paying rent.

Prizes

Rod won the door prize and Colin the raffle.

Patricia showed off her throwing skills for Heads and Tails.  The winner was Bob

Fines

Patricia conducted a very humorous fines session.

Brownies and Fruit Loaf

Many thanks to Ian and Colin for providing delicious Brownies and Fruit Loaf to be enjoyed with coffee.

Visiting Rotary Clubs

Mal asked members to select Rotary Clubs they would be happy to visit to present the fund raising plan for the School of St Yared.

Facebook

Jacquie and Trish do a great job putting together the Attadale RC Facebook page.  We would request all members use the above quick entry into Facebook and read it each week and then ‘like it’.

This makes the club look more progressive and well liked.

Thank You

Jenny Calcei is in hospital recovering from her knee operation.  She has asked that we pass on her thanks to everyone for the beautiful flowers, chocolates and kind thoughts.

We wish her a speedy recovery.

Visit to Rotary Club of Applecross

John gave a very professional presentation to Applecross RC on our Refurbishment and Expansion Project for St Yared.

The members listened intently and asked a number of very thoughtful questions, which John was able to answer well.

President Chris said they would consider our proposal at their next board meeting.

Mal, Colin and Gail went to the meeting to support John.

Notes from Llew Withers

Youth

Emily Hutchinson is our successful candidate for the National Youth Science Forum.  Emily attended the Orientation Day yesterday representing our Club.  Emily will be invited to meet club members before she attends the Forum itself.

Vocation

I am meeting Ms Beth Glasson, of Melville Senior High School, tomorrow to discuss the Work Ready Seminar.  Please diarise the date of Tuesday 6th December AM.  We will require at least 15 Rotarians and another 15 representatives of the community to have the best range of vocations available to conduct interviews.  Please ask your friends and colleagues to take part.  The Work Ready Seminar will be held at the East Fremantle Football Club in East Fremantle.

Combined Community, Youth & Vocation Committee

I would like 5 – 6 Rotarians to consider joining me with managing this portfolio.  The more Rotarians, the more projects.  There are a variety of projects that will involve 1 or 2 Rotarians and some will involve the whole committee.  I’d like meet monthly outside Rotary dinner meetings to track our projects.

Projects this Rotary Year include:

Vocation - Job Ready Seminar, Pride of Workmanship Award

Community - Give a Damn Give a Can,

Youth - National Youth Science Forum, creating a new Rotoract Club, setting up a new Scout Group, Hands Up for Rotary (Mentoring school children)
