Meeting August 27th

President, Mike van Trier, welcomed all members and guests: Brian Goodchild, John Dennis and Needra Wickramaratna.

Mike said a query had been raised as to whether Associate Members were eligible to take part in “The Lucky Joker”.  After some discussion a tied vote was recorded allowing the President to determine that only full members of RCA will participate in “The Lucky Joker”.

Greg James distributed his second flag quiz.

Inductions:

Congratulations to Greg James and Brian Wall who were inducted into the Club.

Keith Timmel reminded members to fill and return their “Love in a Shoe Box” by September 17th and to consider including $9.00 to cover transportation costs.

Treasurer, John Sharp, reminded members that subscriptions are due and can be paid by EFT, cheque or cash.

Sergeant, Ian Pittaway, conducted a brief fines session.

Carol Maxwell thanked Tom Slater for organizing last night’s enjoyable social evening at the Thai Corner.

All present enjoyed the fine company and the pleasant meal.

Tom Slater responded and reminded members of the Sundowner to be held on September 21st at Mike and Donna van Trier’s with BYO drinks and nibbles.

Peter Field’s Lucky Joker ($330+) was drawn by Martin Houchin but he missed the joker.

Colin McCulloch won the door prize.

Guest Speaker

Geographical Place Names

George Lewkowski Introduced Brian who was secretary of the Geographical Names Committee (previously Nomenclature Committee) for many years.  Brian gave us an insight into the guidelines and processes for naming places and used lots of examples from our area south of the river.

A great site to find the history of the names of our towns, suburbs and rivers is:   Landgate WA Place Names

For example:

Ian congratulates Brian on his talk

ATTADALE

The land comprising the suburb was granted to Archibald Butler in 1830 and was acquired by the Scotsman, Sir Alexander Percival Matheson in 1896.  Matheson is believed to have named Attadale after a small town in Scotland situated in to eastern shores of Lock Carron, not far from Applecross.
