ROTARY SPECIAL MONTHS:    OCTOBER IS VOCATIONAL SERVICE

Monday, September 21st, 2015

President Carole welcomed all members, President Lesley Combes and the many members from the RC of Applecross.

Colin introduced our guest speaker, Dr Jeremy Prince and everyone present introduced themselves and included a short comment about their Rotary service.

Movies and Wine

Rod reminded members of our movie afternoon and invited Applecross members to join us. See poster below.

He then outlined a wine fundraiser selling last year's highly esteemed 2010 Amadeus Shiraz  .  Full details and an order form will be out soon.

Succession Planning

John announced that the next Succession Meeting will be held on October 19th and will be all about growing our Club.  He was keen to learn how Applecross attracted new members.

Well done Jim!

Colin congratulated Jim Calcei on behalf of the Bicton School Principal, Mr Stephen Doherty, for his fine craftsmanship in making the "mail box" cabinet.

He reminded members that we can't put in apologies by text message as they are not redirected from our dedicated Club phone.

Winners and Wine

After a short fines session Heads and Tails was won by Mal and the Door prize was won by Fred Soale.

Sergeant Says

Jim asked any members who had not returned their 'Love in a Shoebox' to do so asap or give him a call and he will collect them.  He reminded members of the Quinlan's Restaurant outing on Wednesday and that next week is a long weekend so there will be no meeting.

Coffee and Cakes

Thanks to Colin for providing "30 second whole orange cakes" and "All-bran Loaf" which were enjoyed by all.

Guest Speaker - Dr Jeremy Prince

Colin introduced Jeremy who is a Fisheries Biologist.  He is an Associate Professor at Murdoch University and works as an independent consultant doing much of his work for the Federal Government and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

He gave a very positive report on the management and health of Australia's many fisheries and gave much credit to WA and SA for leading the way in the 1960s in developing sustainable fishing practices.  Many nations have adopted these practices and reversed the decline in their fishing stock.

Jeremy is not a fan of fish farming though bi-valves such as mussels and oysters are fine.

He believes we should buy wild caught fish from WA and Australia.

Check out Jeremy's website for his company Biospherics.

Monday, October 5th, 2015

President Carole welcomed all members, our guest speaker Craig Parsons, his wife Eileen and daughter Ciara and Winston who had been unwell.

Mystery Tour and Picnic

Mal announced that he has planned a one day mystery tour and picnic.  He put forward two possible dates, the 8th or 15th of November, to will be decided at next week's meeting.

AGM for RC of Attadale Neil Henley Foundation

Bob presented his chairman's report and explained how the Foundation operated.

Martin presented his treasurer's report.

It was moved and passed that the $1 members fee be retained.

Bob announced that due to the resignation of Alan Morcombe and Don Rodger and that Martin and Bob's two year terms had expired that replacements needed to be elected.

The four nominations of Jeff for one year and Bob, Martin and Mal for two years were duly declared elected.

Come to the Movies

Gillian thanked members for bringing in money collected so far for movie tickets.

There are still tickets available to see The Intern this Sunday, Oct 11 at 3.30 pm at the Cygnet Theatre, Como.  See poster below.

Please ask family and friends to come and enjoy a great movie and make this event a success!

Marvellous Nancy Bray

Jim passed on thanks from Nancy to all members who had contributed to the "Love in a Shoebox" project.

The 381 boxes sent from the Bicton Uniting Church was the best response ever.

Winners

Abby won the door prize and Martin the raffle.  The joker is still there for the taking.

Thank you Colin

Colin's orange cakes and banana loaf were enjoyed with coffee.

My Amazing Son!

Kerry proudly introduced his son born 50 years ago.

Guest Speaker: Craig Parsons

Craig gave us an inspiring account of how he became a quadriplegic at the age of sixteen, as a result of a motorcycle accident, while competing in Southern Cross, and his journey in the years since.

He was very grateful for the work of Dr George Bedbrook who instigated quadriplegic care and feels he owes his life to him.

He related how a trail-blazing tendon operation allowed him to have a grip action.

After a year in Shenton Park he was ready to go home where ramps had been installed.

Kerry encouraged his son to take on sport.  He has gone on to compete in table tennis at the Seoul Paralympics and wheel chair rugby at the Sydney Paralympics.

He is now a hand cyclist and has been to the Boston and Berlin Marathons and is going to compete in the Rio Paralympics.

While traveling overseas he met his future wife, Eileen, in Ireland.

This amazing man is now married, the proud father of a sixteen year old daughter and a successful businessman.

He encouraged us all to reach for our dreams, plan for life and never give up.

Congratulations to

Nanna and Grandad Rate

Their second grandchild,

Xavier William Young arrived safely on the 30th September.

We have two major fund-raising sausage sizzles at

Bunnings on November 22 and December 12.

With declining numbers we will need all members to

assist on at least one of these dates.

Please plan ahead and arrange your activities so that

      you can help.

We will ask for your day and time preferences closer

      to the dates.
