ROTARY SPECIAL MONTHS:    OCTOBER IS ECONOMIC & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

AND A SPECIAL DAY - OCTOBER 24!!

WORLD POLIO DAY and MEMBERSHIP DINNER

October 24 is World Polio Day when we celebrate Rotary’s success in (almost) eliminating polio from our world.  We are almost there!  Our experts think that the world could be completely polio free in just a few years!

But wait there is more!!

Gareth Parker to be our special guest speaker

Our Club will be celebrating with a special Membership Dinner.

Invitations are going out to many community leaders, friends of Rotary and Rotary Clubs near and far.  We hope that we will have a huge crowd to hear our very special guest speaker: Gareth Parker.

Gareth is the political Editor for The West Australian Newspaper and he is going to be talking on the US Elections.

The elections are a hot topic at the moment and Gareth is a great speaker so please invite all of your friends and let’s make this a night to remember.

Monday, October 3rd

President John welcomed our District Governor Linda McLerie, her grandson Dylan,

Olivia Haslam and Ben Sheridan, members and partners Trish Sharp and Jacquie Pittaway.

John announced the next Board meeting will be on October 11th at Office Works.

He will be away on holidays until the end of October.

Wishing them Well

Betty Bright is still on crutches but is getting out and about.

Jenny Calcei is now out of hospital and still in pain especially when doing her exercises.

Anne Lewkowski is battling severe back pain.

Rey O’Dorisio is now out of hospital and will recover slowly.

Giovana McKay is recovering from car accident.

Llew Withers is recovering from two breaks in his right arm.

Guest Speaker

District Governor Linda McLerie was born in Kalgoorlie and is the eldest of six children.

She trained as a nurse and worked at the Kalgoorlie Hospital.

She has two daughters and when one of her daughters went on Youth Exchange to Denmark, Linda became involved in Rotary.

Since then she has been involved in numerous projects and held many positions of office.

Linda told our meeting that Rotary needs to expand its membership so it can do more good serving humanity around the world.

We are looking forward to the year we see

polio eradicated and need to be ready to celebrate Rotary’s success.

Probus

Winston announced that George Macrides, a past Attadale RC President, will be speaking at the Attadale Combined Probus on their Eighteenth Birthday.

He will tell the members about the relationship between Rotary and Probus.

Attadale RC was the first club in Australia to start a Men’s, a Ladies’ and a combined Probus Club.

One Man, Two Guvnors

Gillian reminded members of the theatre night on Wednesday November 23rd.

Tickets are ready for members to sell.  There are only 100 available so please get your tickets as soon as possible so that you and your friends don’t miss out.

Prizes

Betty won the door prize and George the raffle but he did not find the joker.

Fines and Scottish Quiz

Congratulations to Sergeant Patricia who conducted a very humorous fines session as well as a testing quiz.

We were asked to decipher Scottish phrases into English.

As you can imagine there were many hilarious answers.

With Carole’s knowledge fellow table guests of Mal, Jim, Colin, Gail and Winston were the winners.

Our prize will be Pineapple Shortbread baked by Patricia and served next week.

Pictured are District Governor’s grandson, Dylan, and Sergeant Patricia holding a Scottish tea towel.

Delicious Cakes

Many thanks to Nick and Colin for providing delicious cakes to be enjoyed with coffee.

Visiting Rotary Clubs

Mal asked members to select Rotary Clubs they would be happy to visit to present the fund raising plan for the School of St Yared.

Ladies afternoon tea

Trish Sharp is planning an afternoon tea for all of the Rotary ladies at The Willow Ponds in Canning Vale some time in November.

Facebook Twins

Jacquie and Trish do a great job putting together the Attadale RC Facebook page.    We would request all members use the above quick entry into Facebook and read it each week and then ‘like it’.

This makes the club look more progressive and well liked.

It was lovely to see Jacquie and Trish at the meeting to support our District Governor.

Visit to Rotary Club of Fremantle

Colin made the second presentation asking for support for our School of St Yared project.

It was well received by the members who asked some insightful questions.  It was really good to have Amanda Huxtable with us to answer some of the tricky questions and radiate her enthusiasm.  Amanda has taught in the School of St Yared and visits for six weeks each year to teach and give advice and professional support to the staff.

Mal, and Gail went along to support Colin.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Our AGM will be held in conjunction with our Showcase Review Meeting

at Tompkins on Swan on Monday, November 7 from 6.30pm

Our Constitution states that the order in which business is to be transacted is:

(i) first, the consideration of the accounts and reports of the board;

(ii) second, the election of board members to replace outgoing board members (Note – this election can be deferred to a special general meeting held no later than 31 December each year); and

(iii) third, any other business requiring consideration by the Association at the annual general meeting.

With respect to (ii) above I invite members to nominate for the following Board positions:

President (for 2017/18)                        President Elect (for 2018/19),

Director – Finance                               Director – Marketing

Director – Community                          Director – Youth

Director – International

Secretary                                             Treasurer

I also invite members to nominate for President Nominee (for 2019/20)

With respect to (iii) above I advise that any resolutions to be moved at the AGM require 21 days’ notice to members so must be received by the Secretary by Monday, October 10 to allow time for distribution.

Please consider thoughtfully how you wish to serve the Club in 2017/18.

APOLOGIES:

If you will not be attending the meeting please email the Attendance Officer, Greg James, or phone him on Mob 0427 020 682 before 10.00am on Monday.

Please DO NOT send text messages to 0435 305 199 as they do not transfer from the Club phone to the Attendance Officer's phone.

Unless Greg receives an apology by 10.00am on the day of the meeting the meal will need to be charged to you, and the procedure to recover costs for non apology will be:

a) Attendance officer to report to Treasurer at end of each meeting names of those who didn’t show and didn’t apologise

b) Treasurer to submit all Attendance Officer reports to monthly Board meeting to authorise recovery – valid excuses accepted

c) Treasurer to issue invoices to members monthly following Board meeting based on b).
