ROTARY SPECIAL MONTHS:    OCTOBER IS ECONOMIC & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

AND A SPECIAL DAY - OCTOBER 24!!

WORLD POLIO DAY and MEMBERSHIP DINNER

October 24 is World Polio Day when we celebrate Rotary’s success in (almost) eliminating polio from our world.  We are almost there!  Our experts think that the world could be completely polio free in just a few years!

Gareth Parker to be our special guest speaker

Our Club will be celebrating with a special Membership Dinner.

Invitations are going out to many community leaders, friends of Rotary and Rotary Clubs near and far.  We hope that we will have a huge crowd to hear our very special guest speaker: Gareth Parker.

Gareth is the political Editor for The West Australian Newspaper and he is going to be talking on the US Elections.

The elections are a hot topic at the moment and Gareth is a great speaker so please invite all of your friends and let’s make this a night to remember.

Monday 15th October

Acting President Carole welcomed Olivia Haslam, Ben Sheridan and Caroline Chegeni to the meeting and was glad to welcome Giovanna back again.

Next week is membership night as well as the guest speaker being Gareth Parker talking about - ‘The US Elections’.

Carole asked everyone to think about inviting guests and to let Greg know by Thursday evening so he can organise catering for them.

International Project

Mal gave an update on the International Scene.

He thanked Colin, Mick, Kerry, Carole, Greg, Patricia and Rod for being on the roster to present the talk at other Rotary Clubs.

Thirty-six letters have been sent out asking for help to raise money for The St Yared Project.

So far there have been ten replies but only seven have said they could help.

John spoke at the Applecross RC meeting and Colin spoke at Fremantle and Willetton Rotary Clubs.

We had good feedback from the Willetton Club.  Amanda was a great help answering questions.

Greg will speak to the Rotary Club of Katanning on November 14.

On November 22 Colin, Kerry and Mal will speak at Southern Districts Rotary Clubs.

Welcome Dinner

Ian reminded members of the Welcome Dinner to be held on: - Wednesday, 2 November 2016 at Tompkins on Swan.  Members voted to cancel our regular meeting on Monday 31 October to attend this.  If you will be attending and did not fill in the sheet circulated last Monday indicating that you are coming you will need to let Greg know.

Rotary Club of Applecross

Rotary Vocational Training Team – Sri Lanka

Welcome Dinner

The Rotary Club of Applecross will host the Welcome Dinner for the Rotary Vocational Training Team from Sri Lanka on Wednesday, 2 November 2016.  The dinner will be held at Tompkins on Swan in Alfred Cove, enabling host families, Rotarians and partners to meet and greet the team.

During the program the team will make a presentation on their personal stories and what they hope to achieve during their stay in Perth.

Four clinical scientist Team Members (average age 29) and a Team Leader will come to Perth from 1 – 21 November, for a special training course at PathWest in Nedlands and to visit hospital laboratories at Bunbury and Busselton.

The Team will be hosted by Rotarian families from six Rotary Clubs during their stay.  Hosts will take them to training, Rotary meetings, special events and to see some of the great features of Western Australia.

Team Members were selected from 23 participants who attended a training workshop in May 2016, held as part of a Global Grant Project, ‘Pathology Equipment & Training’, held at the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka.  The USD 207,640 Global Grant was awarded to the Rotary Club of Applecross and the Rotary Club of Colombo South in February 2016, to provide equipment for rapid testing of infectious diseases, installed at hospitals in Jaffna and Nuwara Eliya.  The project is now practically complete.

Invitations will go out to all Rotary Clubs to enable Rotarians and Partners, especially newer members, to attend the Welcome Dinner to see one of the great programs of the Rotary Foundation in action.

Wed 2 November.  Tompkins on Swan.   7.00 pm start.  $25.00 pp + cash bar.

Theatre Night

Gillian announced that so far members have sold sixty tickets for the Theatre night on Wednesday November 23.  She has forty tickets left and encouraged everyone to invite people to attend.

Next week she will organise nibbles to be offered on the night.  For people not attending, they might like to donate food for the platters for supper.

Winners

The door prize was won by Robin.

Mal won the raffle but could not find the Joker.

Funny Fines

Ian conducted a humorous fines session.  This inspired a number of members to buy the box.  Their stories provided a lot more laughter.

Guest Speaker:

Olivia Haslam

Olivia shared stories of her personal and business life with us.

She grew up in Brooklyn New York and learnt business acumen at a very young age from her Grandfathers.

From her earliest days in business, property and development played a big part.

Her business Personal Pathway Solutions (PPS) is a leading West Australian marketing business.

They showcase strategic investment opportunities across finance, property investment and equity fund investments with the aim of highlighting opportunities which could improve a client’s financial path.

Olivia, through her company PPS, is a major Co-Sponsor of the Charity Golf Day.  She said that it is a privilege and an opportunity to give back to the community
