ROTARY SPECIAL MONTHS:    NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION

Monday, October 26th, 2015

Carole welcomed our guest speaker Margaret Wilkes, Elaine Bennett, her daughter Vanessa and partner Niall McGrath

Introducing Margaret Wilkes

Margaret has worked as a Psychologist, Lecturer and Counsellor for over 25 years.

She spoke to us about Mindfulness which has become increasingly recognised as an effective way to reduce stress, increase self awareness, enhance emotional intelligence and effectively handle painful thoughts and feelings.

To demonstrate how to become mindful of what you are doing she had us concentrate on our breathing.

She also gave everyone a raisin and talked us through becoming mindful of every aspect of the raisin before and after eating it.

Ms Margaret Wilkes

Community Invitations

Martin reminded members to send him details of at least three people in the local community that he could invite to one of our meetings in the hope they might like to become members of Attadale RC.

Maritime Day Sausage Sizzle on Saturday

Colin outlined the event in the last Bulletin.  He asked for volunteers to help out on Saturday and we hope the weather and sales are favourable.

Winners

It was Patricia's lucky night as she won the door prize and the raffle.

Niall McGrath was delighted to win a bottle of red wine in Heads and Tails.

Succession Planning

John asked everyone to consider what role they would like to play in the RC of Attadale next year and what would satisfy them and keep them interested.

Coffee and Cakes

Thanks to Colin for providing delicious blueberry muffins.

Thank You

Carole closed the meeting thanking Anne Lewkowski for her great work in Family of Rotary, and Jacquie Pittaway for her great work in providing very interesting guest speakers

The Family of Rotary offer sincere condolences to Yvonne and Rod Rate on the sad loss of Yvonne's sister, Glenys Liddelow.

Monday, November 2nd, 2015

President Carole welcomed our guest speaker Ann O'Neill and Tony Cooke from Angelhands, invited guests Andrew Smith, Jean and Peter McKenzie, Dorothy and Rodney Scrutton and all members.

Some of our Guests

Andrew Smith and Carole Maxwell

Rodney Scrutton, Greg James and Dorothy Scrutton

Guest Speaker:

Ann O'Neill

This is Ann's story that she did not tell us but it is why she does her work with Angelhands:

Ann O’Neill is 45, attractive, dynamic and intelligent.

Twenty one years ago her life was very different.  She was a married woman, aged 24, with two small children, Kyle, 6 and Latisha, 4.

One violent night she lost everything and almost her life.

In the early hours of the morning as Ann slept with her two children beside her, her estranged husband, Norm, broke into her home and turned a gun on all of them.  She was the only one to survive.  Hours later her leg was amputated.

That catastrophic event ripped away all the roles she had ever known and she had to negotiate a whole new life as a disabled person stripped of her motherhood.

Determined not to allow her children to have died in vain, Ann O’Neill threw herself into an advocacy role as a powerful support for others grappling with the aftermath of homicide.

Yet, despite all this, Ann O’Neill has real compassion for the man who perpetrated this shocking crime and with extraordinary courage has drawn on her experience to become a powerful advocate for victims of crime.

Angelhands

Dr Ann O’Neill founded Angelhands Inc as a way of effecting helpful changes to how people affected by homicide and serious personal violence, experience their trauma recovery.

Dr O’Neill’s research found that the recovery of victims and secondary victims was accelerated by enabling them to :-

·      speak to people who understood the experience

·      have non-formalized opportunities to speak about their challenges

·      experience ‘random acts of kindness'

This resulted in the HOPE Program which promotes trust, hope and a sense of social justice.

Want to Visit the Regional Resource Recovery Centre?

Jeff has organised a visit to the Regional Resource Recovery Centre at 350 Bannister Road, Canning Vale on: Friday, 27th November from 9.00 -10.30am.  There is no charge for the visit but there are some stairs as part of the tour.  Details to follow.

Sausage Sizzle

Colin thanked the volunteers who ran the Maritime Day sausage sizzle last Saturday and made a profit of $559.  See the full report and more photos later in the Bulletin.

Christmas Party in the Philippines

Kerry told the members about funds needed to be able to have a Christmas party at the

Davao Jubilee Center in the Philippines.

This centre provides various rehabilitation and treatment services for disabled people.

The party is planned for December 30th and $1000 to $2000 is needed to fund the event.

Thank you Colin

Orange Cakes and Albran loaf were enjoyed with coffee.

Work Ready Seminar Reminder

Jeff asked us to please note 8th December 2015 from 8.30am - 12.00pm in our diaries.

Happy Winners

Robin and Tom were happy with their prizes of a bottle of wine each.

The Joker has jackpotted to $400 and is still there for the taking.

Bruce was happy to win a bottle of wine and a jar of Jim's olives in Heads and Tails.

SMALL SAUSAGE SIZZLE SUCCESSFUL

Many thanks to all of the volunteers who helped out at last Saturday's Sausage Sizzle at Fremantle Maritime Museum for the Maritime Day Expo.

We sold about 190 SSs, 180 drinks and received donations of $6.65 giving a profit on the day of $559.  We used $179 of that to purchase our own gazebo so we now have a complete outfit for smaller sausage sizzles.

Thanks also to the volunteers who weren't required on the day and a special mention to Mick for driving down from the hills.

Combined Districts Membership Forum

Martin reported that Attadale RC was well represented at the Forum held on November 1st at Tompkins on Swan.

The District website will report on it.

Martin thanked members for providing him with the names of people in the local community who may like to join Attadale RC..

He will organize and send them invitations.

If you still need to provide names to Martin he

would like to receive them as soon as possible.

Christmas Meeting December 14th

Ian has organised some FANTASTIC entertainment for this year.  He says it will not be loud and there will be no dancing.  He promises that we will all be talking about it for a long time.

Members, Honorary and Past Members and Partners are all warmly invited to attend.

Ian reminded us about bringing donations of food, day to day household necessities, toys and any other new items that would help improve the lives of those in need to our Christmas Party on December 14th, 2015.
