ROTARY SPECIAL MONTHS:    NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION

Wednesday 2nd November

Welcome Dinner for the Rotary Vocational Training Team from Sri Lanka.

PDG John Kevan welcomed everyone and was pleased to announce that fourteen Rotary Clubs were represented as well as a number of Past District Governors.

President RC Applecross Chris Whelan representing the host club also welcomed everyone.  He said that as a result of this programme the Sri Lankan Team here tonight will soon be able to put into practise all that they will learn while they are here.

He introduced DG Linda McLerie who spoke about The Rotary Foundation’s primary task of funding Global Grants

He introduced PP Libby Hopkins District Rotary Vocational Training Team Chair.

Libby introduced the team members and gave an overview of the three-week programme.  They will: -

·        Spend two weeks at Path West

·        GSE focus will involve cultural activities

·        Have morning tea with the State Governor at Government House

·        Visit Rotary Clubs around the city

·        Move to laboratories in Busselton and Bunbury

·        Visit Ferguson Valley

·        Have opportunities see the countryside and meet with other Rotarians

Chris then introduced PDG Melodie Kevan who spoke about the Global Grant leading to this exciting journey, the Team, selection and planning.

The journey is all about dedicated Rotarians working together to improve disease prevention and increase the opportunity for treatment of infectious diseases.

Many Rotarians have worked diligently to finalise team selection, team training, transport, technical training programme and host family coordination.  Their dedicated service and support is much appreciated.

The USD 207,640 Rotary Foundation Global Grant was awarded to the RC of Applecross and the RC of Colombo South to provide equipment and training for the rapid testing of infectious diseases, installed at hospitals in Jaffna and Nuwara Eliya.

Team Member Presentations

Each team member gave a very interesting and informative presentation with a slide show.

They each came from a different area in Sri Lanka and shared with us their qualifications and the religions, festivals, arts and cultures, primary industries and attractions pertinent to their areas.

Vote of Thanks

PDG Pushpa Pushpalingam thanked everyone for their efforts to make this project a success and wished the team all the best during their time here and when they return home.

We need you

We have two major fund-raising sausage sizzles at Bunnings on Sunday,

November 16 and Sunday, December 11.  With declining Club numbers, we will need all members to assist on at least one of these dates.

Please plan ahead and arrange your activities so that you can help.

We will ask for your day and time preferences at Monday’s meeting.

Melbourne Cup Luncheon

Congratulations and thank you to Patricia for organising three tables at RFGC for the Melbourne Cup.

What a great club member!

Everyone took the opportunity to dress up and get into the spirit of the day.

We all enjoyed the delicious food and atmosphere.

Congratulations to those who were winners.

Club Sweep

Many thanks to Greg and Martin for organising the club sweep.  Congratulations to all the winners

Ethiopia – interesting facts

Our major international project this year is assisting the School of St Yared in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has a population of approximately 94 million and is one of the twenty poorest countries in the world but with one of the fastest growing economies.

There are about 4 million orphans in Ethiopia mainly due to famine and HIV.

Mundaring Visit

Mick Donnes gave a presentation on the School of St Yared to the Rotary Club of Mundaring on November 2.  The members showed keen interest and will consider our request for funding at their next Board meeting.  Colin and Mal accompanied Mick for an interesting night out.

It is always enlightening to visit other clubs and see different ways of doing things and good ideas.  A great idea at Mundaring was a beautifully bound Visitors’ Book.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Our AGM will be held in conjunction with our Showcase Review Meeting

at Tompkins on Swan on Monday, November 7 from 6.30pm

(ii) second, the election of board members to replace outgoing board members (Note – this election can be deferred to a special general meeting held no later than 31 December each year); and

(iii) third, any other business requiring consideration by the Association at the annual general meeting.

With respect to (ii) above I invite members to nominate for the following Board positions:

President (for 2017/18)                        President Elect (for 2018/19),

Director – Finance                               Director – Marketing

Director – Community                          Director – Youth

Director – International

Secretary                                             Treasurer

I also invite members to nominate for President Nominee (for 2019/20)

Please consider thoughtfully how you wish to serve the Club in 2017/18.

Pakuranga Rotary - NZ Tour 2017 for Australian Rotarians

After analysing a questionnaire sent to 4,645 Australian Rotarians via their Rotary Clubs, we (the Auckland Rotary Club of Pakuranga) have tailored the following tour of New Zealand which includes Rotary events.

This tour is 2 weeks long, covers both islands and includes a Rotary host couple and a professional Tour Guide. We are also limiting the quantity of participants to 30 maxima to ensure it is manageable, friendly and that all participants will be fully involved.  So, once we get 30 participants we will be closing applications.

The tour starts on the 30th March 2017 and runs through to Friday 14th April. (Easter Friday) Several meals and tours are included within the price (see later)

There are also some ‘free periods’ where you can select what you would prefer to do, and pay direct.

Tour Prices: AU$4,990 per person share twin.  AU$6,490 Single per person

For a full itinerary and complete details please email Colin.

APOLOGIES:

If you will not be attending the meeting please email the Attendance Officer, Greg James, or phone him on Mob 0427 020 682 before 10.00am on Monday.

Please DO NOT send text messages to 0435 305 199 as they do not transfer from the Club phone to the Attendance Officer's phone.

Unless Greg receives an apology by 10.00am on the day of the meeting the meal will need to be charged to you, and the procedure to recover costs for non-apology will be:

a) Attendance officer to report to Treasurer at end of each meeting names of those who didn’t show and didn’t apologise

b) Treasurer to submit all Attendance Officer reports to monthly Board meeting to authorise recovery – valid excuses accepted

c) Treasurer to issue invoices to members monthly following Board meeting based on b).
