ROTARY SPECIAL MONTHS:    NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION

Meeting November 21st

President John welcomed members and Jacquie Pittaway, Bev Moffatt, James Doogue, Giovanna and Neil McKay.

John asked for a show of hands if members agreed to resume meetings at TOS in early February.

It was agreed almost unanimously.

It is proposed to meet in a restaurant and have a bbq at Heathcote and Rodís place in January.

A number of Attadale Rotarians have volunteered to help Applecross RC at the Jacaranda Festival.

Guest Speaker

Klaus Lucke is a Research Fellow / Lecturer at Curtin University in the Centre for Marine Science and Technology.  He told the story of a very emaciated Killer Whale that was found stranded.  Despite a wide range of identifying techniques, scientists were not able to reunite it with its family so it was housed in a facility in Spain.  He spoke about the importance of sound for marine life.  All sea animals produce and respond to sound for a variety of reasons.  There is a lot of noise in the ocean either made by marine life, manís activities or natural phenomenon.  It was amazing to hear a recording of a lot of these sounds.

The talk was very interesting and informative.

Ethiopian School Project

Mal informed the meeting that next week the Community Newspaper will feature an article about Amanda Huxtable taking a group of girls from Santa Maria College to St Yared School in Ethiopia.  It will also mention the role Attadale Rotary Club is playing in the expansion of the school.

Rotary Charity House

Jim gave an update on the house.  The roof is 95% complete, the float is done in all rooms and the ceilings will soon be in.

Congratulations and Thank you

Ian has volunteered to take over Tomís position of Foundation Chairman for the Attadale Rotary Club.

Ian is also on the Foundation District Committee.

Vocational Training Team

Jeff has given us a report:

The team from Sri Lanka arrived in Australia in early November to learn new techniques in how to treat a variety of clinical specimens and bacteria to confirm a range of emerging tropical infections, and escalating forms of antibiotic resistance.

The visit was also to promote cultural exchange between Sri Lanka and Australia.

Over the three-week period team members had the opportunity to observe the host countryís institutions and ways of life, observe the work they do as practiced in Australia, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.  There was also time set aside to visit various attractions around the Perth metropolitan area.

They were based at PathWest Pathology Laboratory in Nedlands for about two weeks and then travelled to Busselton and Bunbury hospitals as well as enjoying the tourist attractions in the area.

On their return team members, will go back to their hospital laboratories in Jaffna and Nuwara Eliya to operate specimen treatment and real time Polymerase Chain Reaction equipment obtained through the Rotary Foundation Global Grant.

Evadne and I met them on several occasions and hosted two of the team members for a period of their stay.  The program worked out well and included a morning tea with the Governor of the State and some positive publicity in the press in Busselton.

The gathering in Government House

Theatre Night Wednesday November 23rd

Gillian thanked everyone for their support saying 105 tickets had been sold.

Doors open at 7.00pm and the show starts at 8.pm.

She thanked George and Anne Lewkowski for supplying the wine that will be available at $5.00 a glass.

There will also be 2 Christmas hampers raffled.

Please note that the Melville Theatre is located in Stock Road just south of Canning Highway even though its address is 393A Canning Highway.

Christmas Meeting December 12th

Members, partners, honorary members, family and friends are all invited to attend.

Ian handed out a suggestion sheet for people to bring along donations for the Salvation Army to distribute to the needy.

Lt Ronald Stobie from The Salvation Army Cockburn City will be coming to the meeting to accept our donations.  It is an opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Sausage Sizzle and Cake Stall

Colin thanked everyone who contributed and helped with the sausage sizzle and cake stall.

Many thanks to the families who contributed to the cake stall: Calceis, McCullochs, McKays, Pittaways, Robertsons, Rodgers, Sharps, Spicketts and special thanks to Colleen Pugsley, a good Friend of Rotary.  Their cakes sold for a total of $398.

We also sourced Rotary branded cakes and puddings from the Cunderdin RC and made $159 from them.

Colin made a PowerPoint on many of the projects Attadale RC has been involved with over the years and had it playing for customers at the cake stall to watch and motivate them to buy and support Rotary.

He was pleased to announce that the cake stall made $557 and the sausage sizzle $1,477 giving us a grand total of $2034.

We will be taking orders and selling Christmas cakes and puddings at our meetings until Christmas.

It was wonderful to have the grandchildren along

helping with the sausage sizzle

MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED WITH THE SAUSAGE SIZZLE AND CAKE STALL.

Report on Board Meeting

John informed the meeting of: -

Tax applications for the Rotary Charity Houses and GST.

Showcase review meeting in March 2017

Charges at TOS for people who donít have a meal will not be challenged.

Induction checklist will be good to help new members.

Work Ready Seminar will not happen this year.  Llew will visit the school to discuss if there is a more useful way to help them.

Update on Ethiopia.  We have not raised as much on the Global Grant as we were hoping.  The project will now be done in two parts.  Part 1 will be the Dormitory.  Part 2 will be rest of the refurbishment.  We will still continue to raise money.

Winners

Gail won the door prize and the raffle was won by Winston.

Thank you

Patricia thanked Colin for the amazing power point he has made featuring many of the projects Attadale RC has been involved in over the years and also for the orange cake to be enjoyed with coffee.

Homework

Colin spoke again about Project Robin Hood that is being conducted by the City of Melville and is offering a total of $100,000 in grants to community groups for any project that is legal, safe and improves our community.  The grants range from $1,000 to $20,000 and are selected by community voting via email.

Colin indicated that he had come up with an idea but wanted all Club members to look around their community and see what projects they could dream up that would make it a better community.

Giovanna has joined Knit for Charities WA and is making trauma teddies, trying to do one a day.  Ask Giovanna all about it and please save any scraps of yarn or ribbon for her.

Greg presents

On November 14 Greg did a presentation at RC of Katanning requesting funds to assist with the refurbishment and expansion of the School of St Yared.

His old mates loved it!

School of St Yared Presentation

Mal, Colin and Gail attended the dinner meeting of the Rotary Club of Southern Districts at the Gosnells Golf Club on Tuesday evening and Colin did a presentation seeking assistance for our School of St Yared project.

It was an interesting meeting and the presentation was well received.

One of their members sponsors a child at the school and said she would offer strong support when the International Committee met to consider our request after the dinner meeting finished.

Generous Offer

Part of the presentation requests assistance with the building of the Rotary Charity House and we were delighted when Marcello Sirignano of Clean Solutions WA offered to do the final commercial cleaning of the house for us.

What a wonderful gesture!

Please support his business when you can.
