ROTARY SPECIAL MONTHS:    NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION

Meeting November 4th

Our usual meeting was suspended which allowed fourteen members to attend a meeting of the Rotary Club of Bentley Curtin at the Balmoral Hotel.  The meeting featured guest speakers talking about the plight of the homeless in our community and the supportive role of the Street Doctor.  It was interesting to visit a different venue and experience how another club operates.

Meeting October 28th

President George Lewkowski welcomed Rotarians to the meeting in the smaller conference room, and welcomed:

      our guest speaker, Brett Pollock

      Honorary member, Keith Timmel

      Guest Rotarian, Bob Smith

Patrick Bowden, from the Clontarf Foundation

RYPEN student, Qwayden Carey, from the Clontarf Aboriginal College

      and welcomed back Colin Taylor

Colin McCulloch thanked all of those members who had volunteered for an additional sausage sizzle that we will run at Bunnings on Sunday, December 29th.

This means we will now have SSs on:

Sunday, November 17th with the Bicton Menís Shed

      Sunday, December 1st

      Sunday, December 29th

Saturday, February 22nd with the Bicton Menís Shed

Colin asked for five volunteers for this Sunday and Patricia, Betty, Martin, Greg and Tony had their hands up quickly.  Thank you.

Sales are now averaging 800 plus so these SSs are a great opportunity to raise much needed funds.  Rosters for the next three SSs are posted below.

Llew Withers reported that the new Attadale Scouts group, sponsored by RCA, has secured a grant of $7,248 from Lottery West to purchase a wide range of equipment.  He thanked and commended Brian, Patricia, Martin and Greg for helping him prepare the successful submission.

Sergeant Mick Donnes held a short, sharp fines session followed by a game of ďheads & tailsĒ that was won by Keith Timmel.  Winston Marsh won the door prize.

President George Lewkowski said that Phil Palmer had been organizing the Job Seekersí Seminar to be held on Tuesday, November 26th.  Since his sad passing we need volunteers to run this day and conduct interviews.  Patricia recorded the names of the volunteers.

Ian Pittaway announced that we would again support the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal by seeking donations of non-perishable food to be brought to the Christmas Meeting on December 16th.  Also requested were presents for girls and boys.  See the detailed notice below.

Martin Houchin gave details of our visit to the Art Gallery this coming Friday night and asked members to meet in the Manhattan Lounge at 7.15pm.  He has booked the lounge for before and after our guided tour.

Patrick Bowden explained how the Clontarf Foundation works and aims to prepare students for life after school.  The five pillars of their program are: leadership, well-being, football, employment and education.  They continue to monitor and mentor their students after they have left school.

Patrick introduced Qwayden Carey who thanked RCA for sponsoring him on the RYPEN leadership camp.  He told us that he came from Roebourne and had been at the Clontarf Aboriginal College for the last three years.  He really enjoyed the camp and learned a lot.

Text Box: Patrick, Patricia and Qwayden

Guest speaker:  Brett Pollock

Jeff Spickett introduced Brett who told us about his interesting life that led to him running Wooleen Station in the Murchison for many years until he passed it on to his younger son who worked with his partner to regenerate the land.  Brett explained how the station was completely de-stocked, the water turned off and goats and kangaroos eliminated from the land.  Erosion and runoff were controlled with mesh barriers and bunds and the native grasses regenerated in a surprisingly short timeframe.  The station survived on eco-tourism and in future will run just 800 head of cattle (about a third of the lease quota).

Read more about Wooleen Station and Homestead.

Winston Marsh has provided a copy of the first bulletin of the Combined Probus Club of Winthrop that he thought we would find of interest.  It is included as an attachment to the email delivering this bulletin.

Friends of Rotary,

I would like to thank you all so very much for all the phone calls, cards, chocolates and home visits I received following my dearest Mumís passing.

Kind thoughts can help so much at such an emotional and sensitive time.

My warmest thoughts and appreciation to you all.

Trish Sharp

The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal

Christmas Meeting

Monday, December 16th

All members and friends are invited to support the Salvos by bringing donations of non-perishable food and / or Christmas presents to our special Christmas Meeting.

The presents should be Christmas wrapped and indicate whether they

are for a boy or girl and the approximate age.

It has been a long standing tradition of the Club to support the Christmas Appeal and everything will be distributed in the local Fremantle area.

We have always been generous and the Salvos are always grateful for our efforts.
