ROTARY SPECIAL MONTHS:  MAY IS AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH RESEARCH FUND

Text Box: Gillian Baker

Meeting April 29th

Members attended a special meeting of the Fremantle Ports Rotary Club to hear Robert Thomas’s account of sailing to Sydney, competing in the Sydney – Hobart Yacht Race and then sailing back to Fremantle.

Meeting May 6th

President, Mike van Trier, welcomed all members and our guest speaker Helen Keane.

Mike announced that Jacqui Edwards, our GSE nominee for Denmark, has been approved.

He pointed out that this will mean us hosting a team from Denmark next year.

There will be a Board Meeting on May 21st at 6.00pm.

Colin McCulloch spoke about the Sausage Sizzle that clashes with the Movie Event on Sunday June 9th.  As most members will be going to “The Great Gatsby” (or be away) Colin is looking at sharing the day with the Coastal Sharks Netball Club.  Colin and Gail helped Yvonne Rate and the Sharks run a SS at Bunnings O’Connor last Saturday.  The Sharks would provide six workers and we would need nine.  Colin will circulate a list to see if this is feasible.

Update:  There were not enough members available so we have relinquished the sausage sizzle for June 9.

Treasurer John Sharp announced that the books will close at the end of May and there will be a three week hiatus while the books are with the auditor so please put in any bills before then.

Rod Rate reported that a second payment of $18,323.18 had gone to the Motor Neurone Disease Association and that the Board had confirmed they will be beneficiaries of the Golf Day for the next three years.

Martin Houchin reminded members that the Entertainment Books will be available again next week at a cost of $65.  He has more available so tell your friends and also consider that they make great gifts.

The door prize was won by Bob Rodgers and Winston Marsh won the Lucky Joker but couldn’t find the joker that is now worth $900.

The Sergeant conducted a game of heads and tails that was won by Bob Rodgers.

Guest Speaker:  Helen Keane

Cambodia Family Support

Martin Houchin introduced Helen who spoke about how she and her husband, as members of the Perth Rotary Club, support a project in Cambodia.  Through an NGO, ‘Cambodia Family Support’ they work to provide potable water, sanitation and hygiene for poor, rural families and schools along the Thai border.  Rotary Australia assists with the funding.

Guest Speakers:

Tony Wilkie does a great job providing a range of interesting and informative speakers and has been assisted by Club members who are willing to be flexible and “step into the breach” when needed.  Special thanks in this regard go to Mick Donnes, Jim Calcei and John Sharp.

MOVIE EVENT

SUNDAY   JUNE 9   10.30am

CYGNET THEATRE

Dear Rotarians

The Great Gatsby movie which I have booked for the 9th June is a new release which is being released into cinemas about May 30th.

I will be giving each member an envelope with 6 tickets to sell.  The cost is $15 per ticket. Each member will have a number allocated to them and on each of the tickets in your envelope will have that number allocated.

There will be a draw from all the tickets sold for a CD of classical music.  The more tickets a member sells the more chances they have of winning.

Please support this event even if you are not able to attend yourself by promoting and encouraging family and friends to attend.

If you require more than 6 tickets please let me know.

Thanks for your support.
