President John welcomed our guest speaker Peter Di Marco and his wife Karen, Rey Odorisio, Olivia Haslam and Joan Dellavalle.

Movie Fund Raiser a Great Success

Congratulations to Gillian for organising the very successful outing to see the movie Churchill.

She did it in only a few short weeks and made a very handsome profit of around $1,220.

Thank you to all the members who invited family and friends to the event.

Gillian also decided to include a raffle in the cost of a ticket as the Pittaways had done for their church movie fund raiser the week before.  This was a great idea that was very eye catching with eleven fabulous prizes.

Thank you to the people who donated items to be raffled and to Trish and Gail who helped Gillian wrap and display the large number of prizes.

Guest Speaker:  Peter Di Marco

‘Reflections of a Reluctant Toxicologist’

Jeff had great pleasure introducing Peter as he was a work colleague and friend.

Peter and his wife Karen are also long-time friends of Nick and Rey Odorisio.

Peter shared with us: -

The things that shape your life in an interesting talk and power point.

He explained that the meaning of toxicology is the science of poisons.

In the 1900’s a number of high profile events occurred that led to the development of modern chemical regulations.

Events such as large numbers of people dying, or being seriously ill, or suffering major defects due to medical treatments that had not been handled properly or even worse not thoroughly tested.

Each time there was an improvement after these chemical disasters.

Peter was born in Italy.  He shared with us what life was like for his family in Italy and the huge change they experienced when they moved to Australia in 1959.
