CATCHING UP

Colin and Gail have been away caravanning in Tasmania and Victoria and have missed a busy period for the Club.

By all reports the crabbing day was again a fantastic success thanks to Jim and Jenny Calcei.

The combined Attadale / Fremantle golf day reached new heights and raised over $36,000!!!

The bowling night and the quiz night also went off well.

Greg James and helpers organized an excellent GSE.

Special congratulations to Gillian Baker who was inducted into the Club on April 8th

Meeting April 15th

Acting President, George Lewkowski, welcomed all members and special guest Jacqui Edwards.  He welcomed back Colin and Gail McCulloch and gave a very special welcome to Gillian Baker to her first meeting as a full member.

·      George announced that:

·       Max Anderson has applied for leave of absence due to ill health until June 30.

·      The Fremantle Ports Rotary has invited our Club to attend their meeting on April 29th to hear their special guest speaker, Robert Thomas, talk about sailing to and from Sydney and competing in the Sydney – Hobart race.  This will be at the Flying Angel Club, 76 Victoria Street, Fremantle, at 6.00 for 6.30pm.

·      Members are invited to the District Change-over on Saturday, July 6th, at the Golden Ponds Function Centre, Mundijong Road, at a cost of $65 ph.

·      There will be a Board Meeting on May 5th with next year’s Board members invited to attend.

·      There will be a Partners Night on May 20th for the District Governor’s visit.

Llew Withers asked members to a busy bee on Saturday to clean up the Attadale Scout Hall.  Brian Wall is writing a submission to the City of Melville for funds to advertise the new scout group.  Enrolments will be sought at local schools and on-line.

Colin McCulloch reported that he had received an email from Bunnings saying that all organizations are being limited to just two sausage sizzles each financial year.  Colin will meet with Bunnings management to see what can be done about this.

Martin Houchin reminded members that the Entertainment Books will be available through the Club and invited members to place an order.

Ian Pittaway’s fines session starred Ron Day telling us about his terrible weekend at the holiday house when almost everything went wrong.

Greg James introduced Jacqui Edwards who is applying to go to Denmark on G.S.E. and is sponsored by our Club.  Jacqui gave a brief talk about herself and her ambitions and convinced us that she would be an excellent ambassador for our country.

Carole Maxwell persuaded Colin McCulloch to give a brief outline of his recent angioplasty to overcome claudication in his legs.

The door prize was won by Jacqui Edwards and Alan Morcombe won the wine but couldn’t find the joker.

Meeting April 22nd

Acting President, George Lewkowski, welcomed all members and special guests: John and Melodie Kevan and David Whiteman.

George announced that:

·      Gillian Baker is organizing a movie day on Sunday, June 9th (see details under)

·      There will be no meeting at RFGC next week and members are invited to complete the attendance sheet for the Fremantle Ports meeting to which we are invited.

Gail McCulloch reported on Colin’s visit to Bunnings to discuss their decision to cut us to just two sausage sizzles per financial year.  This came from a central company policy decision with which all stores must comply.  They hold Rotary in the highest regard but can only give us two dates and offer us any cancellations.  Colin asked for and was given the two most suitable dates: Saturday, October 19th and Sunday, December 1st

We also retain Sunday, June 9th, that is in the current financial year.

Gillian Baker gave details of the movie day on June 9th and said that tickets were available from her and that she would arrange a best ticket-seller’s prize.

Gillian suggested a get together afterwards for a meal or picnic.

It was noted that the movie day clashed with our next sausage sizzle and that this would require some accommodation.

Tom Slater said that Max Anderson should be back for the DG’s visit.

Ron Day is seeking a laptop computer for his niece, who has breast cancer, lives in Margaret River, and needs a laptop to do courses.

Rod Rate introduced David Whiteman who is the Vice President of the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA and presented him with a cheque for $18,323.77 from the proceeds of the Attadale / Fremantle golf day.

David thanked the clubs for this wonderful contribution and explained how the money would directly help people with motor neurone and also fund research.

George gave congratulations and a huge thank you to Rod, his committee and everyone who made the golf day such a tremendous success.

Llew Withers thanked the volunteers who helped clean up the Attadale Scout Hall last Saturday.

Llew announced that the “Give a Dam, Give a Can” distribution day will be on Sunday, May 26th

Greg James introduced John and Melodie Kevan and John spoke on the Rotary Foundation Cadre.  The Cadre consists of 350 Rotarians with specialist experience in assessing, approving and auditing special, humanitarian grants for projects in countries such as Nigeria, Uganda, Thailand and Nepal.

The Cadre members travel to assess the situation and the viability of each project then report back to the Cadre who decide whether the project merits funding.

John also spoke about “Labs Without Walls” to which our Club has donated $1,500.

The door prize was won by Mick Donnes.  Keith Timmel won the wine but couldn’t find the elusive joker that is now worth over $800.

MOVIE EVENT   SUNDAY   JUNE 9   10.30am   CYGNET THEATRE

Dear Rotarians

The Great Gatsby movie which I have booked for the 9th June is a new release which is being released into cinemas about May 30th.

I will be giving each member an envelope with 6 tickets to sell.  The cost is $15 per ticket. Each member will have a number allocated to them and on each of the tickets in your envelope will have that number allocated.

There will be a draw from all the tickets sold for a CD of classical music.  The more tickets a member sells the more chances they have of winning.

Please support this event even if you are not able to attend yourself by promoting and encouraging family and friends to attend.

If you require more than 6 tickets please let me know.

Thanks for your support.
